Designing a place for worship begins with a variety of architectural and spiritual approaches. Collaboration between architectural and spiritual aspects is the key to develop experiences in this particular mosque.
"Al-Rihla" is taken from Arabic which means The Journey, a phrase we feel has quite a lot of meaning when we interpolate into the context of a spiritual building. We try to develop a narrative about a human journey that will always be faced with a variety of choices in their life. Every time, we will continue to be served on various kinds of branching in life, whether both are good or bad choices. This narrative is what we are trying to build and pour it into the macro design and its response to the mass distribution of buildings.
In general, the building mass is divided into 3 (three) main masses, namely: mosque, ablution area/buffer area to enter, and minaret area. Conceptually, we divide the minaret and platform as a branching mass from the main mass (mosque and ablution space). As two main contrasts in our narration, between the world / dunya العالم and the hereafter الآخرة, meaning that throughout the life of a human race, while we will always pursue things the world, the choices to come back to remember the afterlife will always remain. We interpret this view on the straight pathway (path of circulation) to the minaret (world), but in the process, there are many things or experiences that we want to convey.
First: the choice of the road (branching pathway) to lead to the area of ablution. Second: along the way, we put a reflective field that as a buffer to overcome the view that is aimed at the area in the reclamation island and direct to reflection in the mosque, which spiritually we try to pour the thought that, during the journey every human being pursues in each world, there are commands and warnings that worship is also a fundamental element in the journey of human life.
This combination of architectural solutions (reflective fields) is what we combine with a spiritual narrative that we will repeat throughout the design of this mosque.
